Introduction to Venice, Italy

Venice is astounding. How did this remarkable island, situated two miles from the mainland and precariously protected from the Adriatic by a narrow stretch of land called the Lido, evolve into a world famous Mecca of architecture, culture and Renaissance art? Venice was a major force during the Renaissance, superseded only by Rome and Florence in importance. Today Venice is a traveler’s paradise. Wandering the romantic little alleyways, beautiful Renaissance churches and famous Gothic palaces, surrounded by shimmering waters, makes the journey remarkably enriching.
